Wenger: Giroud not first-choice striker

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has told Olivier Giroud that he is effectively in a job share with Theo Walcott, describing them both as ‘top-level strikers’. Frenchman Giroud will start against Tottenham in the Capital One Cup after Walcott was chosen for the 2-0 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday. “With Giroud, it is a competition with Walcott. When one plays people always ask, ‘Why did you not play the other one?'” said Wenger. “When you have two top-level strikers, some games Giroud plays and some games Walcott plays. Nobody anymore can play 60 games per season. “What we want to do is make the right decision for the right game. Giroud is a guy who has a positive attitude, who is ready to have a go. “He is a very strong man and, with his back to the wall, Giroud can always respond. I think he has assets in the game. “For two guys it can be interesting for the squad as they both have different qualities. They complement each other very well. “Giroud’s all-round game is vital because it is one of his assets. He can protect the ball, he can hold the ball, he can bring other players in. “That’s one of the big parts of his game and that is why he creates so many chances and that is why the other players love him and love to play with him.” In the Premier League so far this season, Giroud has played 305 minutes and Walcott has played 284 minutes. The Frenchman has scored twice and the Englishman has netted once.

Aston Villa 0-1 West Brom: Berahino strikes

Saido Berahino backed up his West Brom strike vow, scoring the only goal of the game at Aston Villa.

The Burundi-born front man had promised to never again play for club owner Jeremy Peace after a deadline day move to Spurs fell through, but returned to action in the 0-0 draw with Southampton last week.

Berahino made his first start since his threat at Villa Park on Saturday, reacting quickest to James Morrison’s shot to divert it past Villa keeper Brad Guzan for West Brom’s first away goal of the season, with the Baggies holding on to secure all three points.

It was all Albion as they out-thought and out-battled Villa during a tight Barclays Premier League derby.

There are no issues between the Baggies squad and Berahino, despite his off-field antics as he tried to force through a move to Tottenham, and his goal underlined his value to the side.

He also repaired any lasting fractures with the West Brom fans and the 22-year-old threw his shirt into the travelling support at full-time.

But Villa’s worries continue to grow, with Tim Sherwood’s side without a Barclays Premier League win since the opening day following another tepid display.

They host fierce rivals Birmingham in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday and defeat is not an option after an unconvincing start.

The Baggies started Berahino, along with James Morrison and James McClean, for the first time since rejecting two deadline-day bids from Tottenham and made a bright start as Brad Guzan produced a fine stop to keep out Salomon Rondon’s flicked header inside two minutes.

Albion’s £12million record scorer impressed all afternoon as he gave the visitors a fine unselfish focal point, even if he failed to score.

It was in stark contrast to Gabby Agbonlahor who toiled against the strong Albion defence, who have now kept four straight clean sheets.

Agbonlahor has now scored just four goals in his last 31 games and his lack of penetration leads to legitimate questions over his role in the Villa side.

He lost out in every aerial tussle but did worry Albion after 26 minutes when he wriggled free on the left and crossed for the onrushing Carles Gil, who was denied by a brilliant block by Claudio Yacob.

It was Villa’s best opening but they relied on Guzan five minutes later when he tipped Darren Fletcher’s drive wide.

The game desperately needed a goal as it threatened to limp to half-time, and Berahino kept to the script as he delivered six minutes before the break.

A brilliant Craig Dawson tackle allowed McClean to cross from the right.

He found Rondon to lay off for Morrison, and his 18-yard effort was deliberately deflected past Guzan by Berahino.

Villa were jeered off and Sherwood reacted by sending on Rudy Gestede for Scott Sinclair at the break.

Carlos Sanchez and Gil shot straight at Boaz Myhill during a muted Villa response as Albion comfortably maintained their lead.

Guzan claimed Rondon’s drive at the second attempt on the hour before Villa were denied a penalty after 65 minutes.

Berahino looked to be inside the area when he blocked Alan Hutton’s cross, with referee Martin Atkinson giving a free-kick for handball just outside the box.

It infuriated Villa, although whether the ball hit Berahino’s arm was also up for debate, but they wasted the free-kick.

Albion broke and Rondon shot straight at Guzan before Villa cursed the officials again with 20 minutes left.

Micah Richards headed past Myhill but the hosts had already been awarded a free-kick following a foul on Jack Grealish.

Villa, though, never looked like breaking the Baggies down again and Gestede headed over in injury time to waste their final chance.

England boss Roy Hodgson is unsure whether delaying a decision on his contract is correct

England manager Roy Hodgson has questioned whether the decision on his future should be delayed until after Euro 2016. AC Milan won't increase offer for Roma defender Alessio Romagnoli

AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani says the club will not increase their offer for Roma defender Alessio Romagnoli this summer. The Rossoneri have made a £17.5m (€25m) bid to acquire the 20-year-old centre-back, who is under contract with Roma until June 2018 and has also been linked with Arsenal, according to The Telegraph. Chelsea fans fighting banning orders to learn fate next week

The black commuter at the centre of the Paris Metro race row has told a court that he was "violently" pushed off the train as a Chelsea fan pointed to his skin colour. Souleymane Sylla was repeatedly shoved off the carriage amid chants of "John Terry is a racist and that's the way we like it, ooh, ooh, ooh". Four British football fans admit being in the carriage and three of them say they pushed the Parisian off - but insist it was because it was too full, not because he was black. The case was adjourned until next Wednesday when District Judge Gareth Branston will give his ruling. "I'm disappointed about losing the goal, especially the way we lost it," Hughes said.
